(5) – Agriculture and Agri-Food Profile - Hong Kong and Macao – (May 2013, 6 pages)

Hong Kong and Macao are two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of China with autonomy of governance in all matters with the exception of foreign affairs and defence. Hong Kong and Macao have their own food laws and import control regimes that are different and independent from China. While China continues to be a leading supplier of fresh produce to Hong Kong and Macao, Hong Kong and Macao buyers source the best-value products from all over the world. Frequent media reports of food safety issues in the mainland are driving increased consumer demand for products imported from countries with reputations for food safety, such as Canada, despite potentially higher prices. This report provides information on: sector overview, market and sector challenges (strengths and weaknesses), sub-sector identification and a list of useful internet sites. www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca.
